Writing

Writing Subject Leader: Mrs Whitney

Writing is a vital skill for primary-aged children, not only as part of their English learning but across all areas of the curriculum. Whether they are explaining a science experiment, writing about a historical event, or reflecting on a piece of art, being able to express thoughts clearly and creatively is a skill that transfers into every subject — and into life beyond the classroom. From Reception through to Year 6, children at The Willows will learn to write in a wide range of genres, from traditional fairytales and adventure stories to factual pieces such as non-chronological reports, diary entries and newspaper articles. These writing experiences help children find their own voice and authorial style, while also developing important skills like organisation of ideas, planning and critical thinking. By sharing and celebrating their writing with classmates, teachers and the wider school community, children also grow in confidence and take pride in their achievements.

When reading and writing are closely connected, children's creativity and imagination truly flourish. High-quality picture books, poetry and novels by authors such as Katherine Rundell, Joseph Coelho, Jeanne Willis, and S.F. Said serve as rich sources of inspiration. These texts not only expose children to exciting vocabulary, powerful storytelling and diverse perspectives, but they also provide a strong foundation on which pupils can build their own ideas and develop as writers. Studying these works helps children understand what makes a piece of writing effective and allows them to explore different ways of expressing themselves. When the reading and writing curriculum go hand in hand, children are empowered to become both thoughtful readers and confident, imaginative authors.
