Physical Education
PE at The Willows aims to empower children physically, mentally, emotionally and socially to become well-rounded, confident individuals. Many children do not have access to outdoor spaces and organised clubs. They also have a high level of screen time and low activity level. Therefore, we aim to inspire and engage pupils to create good, healthy lifestyle habits which can be developed and continued into adult life. We aspire to provide high quality learning of both specific sport and fitness knowledge, and practical skills which will help prepare our students for challenges in and out of the classroom by championing the School Games Values such as determination, teamwork and respect.
At the Willows, we offer a broad PE curriculum which builds upon the skills and knowledge taught in the previous years. This is delivered by teachers and specialist sports coaches for two hours per week. Staff are given support through targeted CPD and informal discussions, enabling improvement in the consistency and effectiveness of lessons. Tasks are adequately differentiated where needed and teachers uphold high expectations consistent with other subject lessons. Gym trail interventions support gross and fine motor skills for small groups, where necessary and Key Stage 2 children are given the opportunity to attend swimming lessons during the year, to provide them with a valuable life skill.
Children across KS2 regularly compete against other local schools in a variety of sports and are praised for their fair play and enthusiasm. Sport, PE and competitions are inclusive at The Willows with children identified as inactive being supported to take part in physical activity.
