PSHE

At The Willows, PSHE is a vital part of the curriculum; teaching children the importance of keeping healthy, developing an understanding of their emotions and an awareness of those of others. This is important to enable the children to form strong, healthy relationships within the school community and beyond.

PSHE at The Willows draws on good practice, utilising the ‘Jigsaw Scheme of Work’. Each Class Teacher delivers regular lessons, which follow the Jigsaw lesson structure. The lessons include a short relaxation meditation called ‘Calm Me’, which provides the children with a very useful tool to support themselves, not only within these lessons, but outside school as well. Pupils have a PSHE Learning Journal, which stays with them throughout their time at The Willows. Within their books, the children record work, which highlights the peaks of their learning journey and reminds them, when reflecting back, how far they have come in their emotional and social understanding. As a school, we collaborate to recognise the importance of well-being on all levels; partaking in key events such as 'Hello Yellow Day', which highlights Mental Health awareness, 'Friendship Week', which focuses on what it means to be a positive friend and 'Walk to School Week'. Our Inclusion Team are committed to creating additional inclusive, safe and nurturing spaces for children who require it, drawing on THRIVE techniques.

As part of a whole-school approach, PSHE education develops the qualities and attributes pupils need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society. Also, it reduces many of the barriers to learning experienced by pupils, significantly improving their capacity to learn and achieve and succeed.
