French

Learning a foreign language allows for a deepened understanding of our local multi-cultural society, leading out to the wider world. The teaching of French will enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. The teaching of French will provide opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes.

Key Stage Two children receive weekly lessons following a broad, varied yet enjoyable programme of study. The children will be able to have basic conversations using familiar vocabulary, phrases and the ability to ask questions and understand French dialect. They will explore the French language through drama, songs, rhyme, art and real-life situations.

The curriculum aims for languages to ensure all pupils are:

  • Understanding and responding to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources.

  • Speaking with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they say.

  • Writing at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt.

  • Discovering and developing an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.

Children develop a life-long love for learning about other cultures through the French language. Detailed Knowledge Organisers will ensure for continuity, coverage and quality across the French curriculum for Key Stage Two. At The Willows, our aim is for children to be on a successful learning journey, in preparation for continued success in secondary school.
