Year 6 have made a fantastic and sensible start to the new school year. They’ve settled quickly into routines, shown great maturity, and are already demonstrating our FISH values — being Fun, getting Involved, showing Self‑awareness, and being everyday Heroes around the school. It’s been a genuinely lovely first full week back, and we’re very proud of them.
As part of our enquiry topic, Is anything worth dying for?, the children began exploring World War I. They were fascinated to learn that around 67 million men and boys volunteered to fight, including Sidney Lewis, who enlisted at just 12 years old and later fought at the Somme. The class approached these discussions with real thoughtfulness, asking mature questions about bravery, duty and the pressures young people faced at the time.
In English, we started reading Goodnight Mister Tom. After finishing Chapters 1 and 2, the children learnt about Willie’s difficult start as an evacuee and how his life begins to change under Mr Tom’s care. They took part in role play and freeze‑frame drama, exploring the characters’ emotions and building a deeper understanding of the story.
In Computing, Year 6 have been learning about blogs and vlogs — what they are, how people use them, and how to stay safe online. We discussed key online‑safety rules, including:
-
Keeping personal information private
-
Using kind and respectful language
-
Checking privacy settings
-
Knowing when to ask an adult for help
The children showed a sensible awareness of how to behave responsibly online and how to keep themselves safe when creating or viewing digital content.
