Core Learning Skills
We believe that children learn best when they’re supported not just academically, but in all areas of life. That’s why we explicitly teach a set of core Learning Skills that help pupils grow into confident, thoughtful, and effective learners—whatever their age or stage in school.
These lessons focus on three key areas:
- Personal and social skills – helping children build friendships, understand emotions, and work well with others.
- Thinking skills – encouraging curiosity, problem-solving, and independent learning.
- Communication skills – supporting children to express themselves clearly and listen to others.
These important skills are first taught in dedicated lessons, so children can understand and practise them clearly. Then, teachers plan activities across all subjects—like maths, science, and art—where pupils can continue to use and strengthen these skills as part of their everyday learning.
Together, these skills prepare children not just for school, but for lifelong learning and success.
