At The Willows Primary School, we are proud to offer a specialist horse riding provision in partnership with Woodbridge Riding for the Disabled (RDA). Delivered through the Changing Lives Through Horses (CLTH) programme, this unique opportunity enables pupils to learn, grow, and succeed in a supportive  environment.

A Structured and Supportive Programme                                                                                    

Pupils take part in weekly sessions that combine:

• Riding activities – including balance, steering, and transitions
• Horse care – such as grooming, feeding, and leading
• Practical learning – understanding horse behaviour, wellbeing, and equipment

The programme is carefully structured across the year, allowing pupils to start with essential safety skills and basic riding, before progressing towards greater independence and more advanced riding activities.

Building Confidence and Life Skills

Horse riding at Woodbridge RDA supports pupils far beyond the physical skill of riding. Through their participation, pupils develop:

• Confidence and self-esteem through achievement and progress                
• Communication skills when working with staff and reflecting on learning
• Responsibility by caring for the horses and equipment
• Resilience and perseverance when learning new skills
• Teamwork and relationships with peers and animals

Working closely with horses also helps pupils to build empathy, patience, and emotional awareness.

Progression and Achievement

The programme follows three stages:

• Foundation – learning safety, building trust, and developing basic riding skills
• Level 1 – increasing independence, including trot work and more complex riding patterns
• Level 2 – refining skills, taking responsibility on the yard, and demonstrating independence

Pupils work towards recognised CLTH awards, celebrating their progress and helping them to take pride in their achievements.
