This week in Art, Year 5 explored the work of the famous surrealist artist Salvador Dalí. We looked closely at some of his most well-known paintings, including The Persistence of Memory and The Elephants. We discussed our first impressions and carefully examined the unusual objects, colours and imaginative ideas in his artwork. We shared our thoughts about what the paintings might mean, asked questions and made observations about the different details we noticed. We also talked about how Dalí’s paintings made us feel and why they can seem strange or surprising. This lesson helped us begin to understand Dalí’s unique artistic style and the creative world of Surrealism.

In Reading, we began reading our new class text, The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes. We explored the historical background of highwaymen and learnt about the famous highwayman Dick Turpin. Through discussion, we considered what life might have been like during this period and how historical events can inspire stories and poems. We also shared our first thoughts about the text and made predictions about what might happen next.
