Enquiry – Moving from WW1 to WW2

This week in our enquiry lessons, Year 6 have transitioned from World War One to World War Two.
The children have begun to explore how and why the second global conflict began, making links to their prior learning about WW1. They have shown great curiosity and already begun comparing key events, leaders, and changes across both wars.

Alongside this, we are in the middle of a three-week writing sequence, using our WW1 research to create detailed Non-Chronological Reports. Pupils have been organising facts, developing technical vocabulary, and working on writing clearly and formally for an audience.

🍪 Design & Technology – Wartime Rations

In DT, Year 6 are learning how food and ingredients were affected by rationing during WWI.
This week, pupils:

  • Explored which ingredients were available at the time

  • Designed their own wartime-style cookies using ration-friendly items

  • Tested and adapted recipes in preparation for baking next week

Once our WW1 baking is complete, we will repeat the process using WW2 rationed ingredients, with the hope of producing a final festive bake ready in time for Christmas!

💡 Science – Light & Reflection

Our science focus this half-term is Light.
This week, pupils have been investigating:

  • How light travels in straight lines

  • How and why certain materials are more reflective than others

  • Real-life safety applications

We linked this learning to the importance of high-visibility clothing, especially as the evenings get darker. Both Year 6 classes now have newly appointed Road Safety Officers, who helped us discuss how reflective materials help keep people safe on the roads.

A Busy and Brilliant Week!

Year 6 have tackled a big week of learning with fantastic enthusiasm, teamwork and maturity. We look forward to sharing more updates as our wartime enquiry, writing projects, and festive DT creations continue.
