Summer 2026
This term, Year 5 will be exploring a fascinating big question:
Can we always believe our eyes?
Through this theme, pupils will investigate how and why what we see is not always what is real, developing curiosity, critical thinking, and creativity as they explore perception and illusion in the world around them.
In Art, we will be diving into the world of optical illusions, with a focus on the surreal works of Salvador Dalí. Children will experiment with techniques such as distortion, perspective, and digital manipulation to create their own striking visual illusions, challenging how images can trick the eye and th
e mind.
In English, we will be reading Zombierella, using this imaginative text as inspiration for the children to write their own traditional tale with a twist. Later in the term, we will explore the powerful poem The Highwayman, focusing on performance poetry as well as developing skills in writing an engaging explanation text.
In Science, our learning will focus on forces and living things and their habitats. Pupils will work scientifically to design and carry out experiments investigating friction, air resistance, and water resistance, as well as using classification systems to identify and group plants and animals found in our environment.
In History and Design Technology, we will explore the history of the camera and how photography has changed over time. Children will also design and make their own kaleidoscopes, discovering both their scientific principles and their fascinating history, linking creativity with scientific understanding.
It promises to be an exciting and thought-provoking term full of creativity, investigation, and discovery.
